EYA Homeowner Spotlight: Everett and Angelita @ Chancellor’s Row

February 10, 2013 | by | 0 Comments

Our next homeowner spotlight is Everett and Angelita at Chancellor’s Row. Empty-nesters, Everett and Angelita moved into the city from the suburbs and love their new urban neighborhood. They have enjoyed exploring the Brookland community and the ease of taking public transportation to museums, restaurants and music venues.

1. Why did you choose an EYA property?

We chose Chancellor’s Row even before the models were built. Chancellor’s Row met all of our needs by being walking distance to the Metro, restaurants, leisure activities and entertainment.  With our move to Chancellor’s Row, Everett’s commute went from a ‘grueling hour’ to 10 minutes on the metropolitan bike trail to his office just 3 miles away.

2. What attracted you to the area?

We were attracted by the diversity of the community and the opportunities being in the city would bring.  We had lived in the suburbs with a focus on family-centric activities for 20+ years but our lifestyle had changed and as empty-nesters it was time to make a change.

3. What do you like most about your EYA home?

We love everything about our home.  It’s an Elliot end unit with lots of natural light and great views.  From our rooftop terrace, on one side we look over green space and St. Paul’s College and from the other side, we have an open view of the Chancellor’s Row community.

On the inside it’s the perfect size for the two of us with a great kitchen, fantastic loft space, room for each of us to have telework space and a dedicated guest room.  The guest room is essential now that we live in the city and are a destination for family and friends to visit.  We do like to go out, but home is so nice that after a busy week we are also very happy to just stay near home, go for walks and visit the local shops and restaurants.

4. What is your favorite restaurant/bar/store/etc. in the area?

To be honest, our favorite place to eat is at home in our gorgeous kitchen.  We have a classic kitchen with a combination of white cabinets and black quartz countertops.  We love to troll local stores for fresh and interesting ingredients while trying out new recipes or making traditional family meals.

When we do go out, we enjoy the Atlas Room on H Street, or for a quick bite, we like the Good Stuff Eatery, Union Market or Luke’s Lobster in Penn Quarter.  Live jazz is a favorite pastime for us so whenever possible we go out to hear jazz and have dinner before a show at the Kennedy Center Café, Blues Alley, Bohemian Cavern or Twins Jazz on U Street.

5. Have you met your neighbors? If so, how did you get to know them?

We’ve been to several get-togethers in the Chancellor’s Row community and already made some great friends.  Last spring and summer we also attended events held in Brookland and we were able to get to know more about the larger community in terms of the rich history, arts, music and gardens.

6. What are your personal interests/hobbies?

We both share a love of music, theatre and gardens.  Everett is an avid cyclist, loves photography and is a science and history buff.  With access to the city and all it has to offer, we’ve gotten much more spontaneous and changed plans on the run because there’s always something to do.  We’ll take the Circulator bus to Georgetown to see a movie, take Metro to Foggy Bottom, the shuttle to the Kennedy Center or walk to the mall from Union Station without knowing exactly which museum we’ll end up visiting.

EYA Homeowner Spotlight: Russell and Robbie @ Mosaic District

December 12, 2012 | by | 0 Comments

This month’s Homeowner Spotlight is on Russell and Robbie at Mosaic District. Former commuters, Russell and Robbie are loving their new walkable lifestyle and have enjoyed watching the brand new Mosaic District retail shops and restaurants open just steps from their front door.

Russell and Robbie's favorite Mosaic District retailers include MOM's Organic Market, Four Sisters and Target.

1. Why did you choose an EYA property?

We became empty nesters about two years ago. We decided we wanted more conveniences and options in our life. So, when we started looking for a new place to call home it was a tossup between no more commuting 3 hours a day or a “life within walking distance.” We looked at a lot of places before deciding. EYA offered us everything we were looking for and more. We used to drive a mile to pick up our mail. So it is very exciting to walk over to all the shops at Mosaic. Our commute is now 3 miles vs. 3 hours. The time we have back is more than we expected. Not only did we get 3 hours a day back but we no longer have to go to bed by 9:00 pm and get up at 4:00 am. We love all the options we have with a new EYA home and community. Our life now is about enjoying our time with friends.

2. What attracted you to Mosaic District?

I would have to say, we saw the potential of what this home brought to our desired lifestyle. We moved in June 22nd and it’s been fun watching Mosaic develop and blossom. We love our neighbors and enjoy going out to dinner with them or having Terrace parties. We enjoy walking to Angelika to see a movie or a late night walk over to Cold Stone for ice cream. It’s been great watching the shops come in and having such a variety of options to enjoy.  Knowing more to come is exciting and also fun to watch and see what will come next.

3. What do you like most about your EYA house?

While I am not a tree hugger, I truly did like the idea of a house built to LEED standards. My company prides themselves on that certification and I know it’s truly hard to achieve. The rooftop terrace is definitely a huge plus and we do spend quite a bit of time on it. For a lot of the houses we looked at, the amenities we got standard with EYA would have been upgrades elsewhere. The biggest feature I love the most is the brick wall on the second floor. What a nice touch to have that option.

4. What is your favorite restaurant/bar/store/etc. in the area?

Hands down, it’s Four Sisters. The food is awesome, reasonably priced, the service is outstanding and the decor is warm and inviting. It’s so nice to have a grocery store within walking distance, too. MOM’s Organic Market and Target supply everything we need.

5. Have you met your neighbors? If so, how did you get to know them?

We met our neighbors before moving in at the Grand Opening back in June. Our sales team ensured we were involved and informed when local events were taking place. Since then, EYA has held several “Meet and Greet” events that have allowed us to meet the neighbors who haven’t moved in yet. Everyone coming into the area are genuinely nice folks.

6. How will you use your rooftop terrace?

There have been several get-togethers sponsored by EYA and a couple get-togethers hosted by neighbors. They have been a blast to go to and get to know everyone. Moving into the EYA community so early has helped provide a common bond.

7. Do you have a special place you like to vacation?

We like to go on cruises. Many times we will take a train to NYC and cruise from there. Outside of cruising, NYC is someplace we both would go to every weekend if it was feasible.

EYA Homeowner Spotlight: Veronica & Rob @ Old Town Commons

October 18, 2012 | by | 0 Comments

Ever wonder who else is buying an EYA home? This month we are highlighting Old Town Commons homeowners Veronica and Rob. Outdoor enthusiasts and world travelers, Veronica and Rob enjoy the Old Town Commons walkable urban lifestyle and sense of community built among neighbors.

1. Why did you choose an EYA property? What attracted you to the surrounding neighborhood?

Before relocating to the DC-metro area, we purchased a home and ended up spending a considerable amount of time after work and on the weekends renovating and upgrading.  We were extremely disappointed with the time lost that could have been spent enjoying life with friends or exploring the local area, and we were determined that our next purchase would be move-in ready to our personal style.  Additionally, having lived abroad in Europe and Asia for much of our adult life, we missed the urban lifestyle where transportation, recreation, entertainment, and subsistence were only a few steps away from the front door.  Lastly, as avid dog owners, a dog-friendly neighborhood was a must.  EYA’s Old Town Commons development has met all of these requirements.

2. How long have you lived in this neighborhood, and what do you like about it?

We have lived here since September 2011.  Besides the pedestrian friendly amenities already discussed, what makes Old Town Commons special is the sense of community.  Reminiscent of bygone times in an American culture, with so many people living disconnected lives in the “burbs,” Old Town Commons offers a wonderful opportunity to connect with fellow neighbors, building a sense of community where everyone looks after one another building a strong bond that will last over time.

3. What is your favorite restaurant/bar/store/etc. in the area?

We like La Tasca and Murphy’s Irish Pub for their food and live music.  La Madeleine is trés bon for weekend breakfast/brunch.  My personal favorite unique King Street shops are 3 Sisters, Lou Lou’s, and Why Not (a great source for fun and interesting children’s toys and stuffed animals).

4. What neighborhood activities, if any, do you participate in?

We have attended community block parties, hosted an outdoor movie night behind the houses, routinely gathered at our residences for cocktails and hors d’oeuvres, or we’ve gone out together as a group celebrating promotions, birthdays, and other moments of significance.  We love local races (running, biking, etc.) and we also are big fans of the Old Town Theater and the Old Town/DC restaurant weeks!

5. Have you met your neighbors? If so, how did you get to know them?

We know most of our neighbors through our dogs.  Old Town Commons is a very dog-friendly neighborhood.  Additionally, we are all very active and often run into each other during the evenings.  We also have a neighborhood community Facebook page where we share our thoughts, concerns, and community events.

6. Tell us a bit about yourselves. What are your personal interests / hobbies?

We are both career soldiers having served in the Army for over 20 years.  We have traveled the world; both hostile and friendly places!  We love to travel and anything outdoors… skiing, biking, running, scuba diving, motorcycling, etc.  Most of all, we love our two boys; weighing in at 145 pounds, they are a Newfoundland-Labrador mix and taking them on long walks in the evenings and on the weekends is a great way to unwind from the hectic pace of the world we live in.

EYA Homeowner Spotlight: Lindsay & Jake @ Chancellor’s Row

January 5, 2012 | by | 1 Comment

Ever wonder who else is buying an EYA townhome? We’re starting a new feature where we drop in on one of our neighborhood’s original homeowners (with their permission, of course!) to get to know them better. This month we visited Lindsay and Jake at Chancellor’s Row. They moved into their new townhouse nine months ago.

Why did you choose an EYA property? What attracted you to the surrounding neighborhood?

At the time, we weren’t even looking for a house. We saw a random ad for the opening of the EYA Chancellor’s Row sales office and we thought, “Why not go check it out?”.  When we got to the trailer, we couldn’t believe the prices for such quality townhouses in DC. A week later, we were under contract.

What do you like most about your townhouse?

We like the space along with the fact that we have a garage and a rooftop deck with a view of the National Basilica. Also, we are not a fix-it-up couple, so getting a new house where we could easily pick out customized options made it a great fit.

What is your favorite restaurant/bar/store/etc. in the area?

It is probably our neighbors Mike and Patrick’s house, but we’re sure that doesn’t count! We’ve tried a few restaurants in the neighborhood, but our favorite thing to do is grill out at our house.

What neighborhood activities, if any, do you participate in?

We like exploring our neighborhood – 12th Street, Catholic University, Rhode Island Ave, the US Soldiers and Airmens Home Golf Course, Lincoln’s Cottage, etc. We are both runners and that allows us to see all different parts of Brookland.

Do you have a special place you like to vacation?

We are definitely beach vacation people (love the sun, sand and a tropical drink) and just got back from the Dominican Republic. But, at some point in the next few years, we plan on going to Italy to enjoy some good food and wine.

What are you personal interests / hobbies?

When we aren’t working, we enjoy hanging out with friends, working out, watching sports (our Wisconsin sports teams have had a good year with the Wisconsin Badgers, Marquette Golden Eagles, Milwaukee Brewers and Green Bay Packers), and traveling to see our family members all over the US.

Stay tuned next month for a new EYA Homeowner Spotlight!
