Brookland’s booming Monroe Street Market is quickly becoming one of DC’s most coveted neighborhood destinations.

Just announced: Locally-renowned Filter Coffeehouse and Espresso Bar will be partnering with owners of The Bike Rack to bring a bike shop/coffee house concept to a large retail space along the Arts Walk. Their spot is expected to open this Fall.

A farmer’s market will also open at Monroe Street Market this May, offering goods from up to 20 vendors on Saturdays from 9 AM – 1 PM. The market will be operated by Lydia’s Fields, the same group who organizes the Arlington Courthouse Farmer’s Market (pictured).

EYA today announces its 2014 college scholarship contest for District of Columbia public & charter high school seniors living in Ward 5. This June the company will award a $2,000 annual scholarship to up to two students based on an evaluation of short essays and recommendations.

Interested students are encouraged to submit an application as soon as possible. To qualify, a student must:

  • Be a senior at a DC Public or Public Charter High School
  • Reside in Ward 5
  • Have accepted admission to either a 2-year or 4-year college (by the June 6, 2014 application deadline)
  • Have a GPA that ranks in the top 30% of their class

Over the past few years, Brookland’s 12th Street NE has been undergoing a quiet renaissance with an influx of exciting new retail and restaurants. Currently home to culturally diverse dining options, Yes! Organic Market  and a new Capital Bikeshare station, 12th Street will also soon feature a new 20-unit condo building. In case you haven’t been in a while, stop by one of the new 12th Street restaurants for a taste of Brookland today.

Menomale has become a neighborhood favorite providing delicious Neapolitan-style pizzas, calzones and wood-fired sandwiches. Named one of the Washingtonian’s 2013 “100 Very Best Restaurants,” the restaurant has received acclaim from both critics and locals. Also specializing in craft beers, Menomalé has 20 craft beers on tap to taste or enjoy with your meal.

Serving up scrumptious Cuban cuisine, Little Ricky’s will add some spice to your life. Enjoy tasty empanadas, ceviche and a variety of sandwiches including Cuban chicken and pulled Cuban coffee BBQ.  They also have a great menu of signature cocktails and are open for brunch on Saturdays and Sundays until 3:00 PM.

12th Street is also home to two wonderful local cafes. The Brookland Café, also known as Bcafe, is a charming neighborhood spot offering American fare and vegan meals. For a different twist on healthy eating, stop by Askale Café for its Ethiopian-American fusion cuisine and unique teas and coffees.

Two more restaurants will also be opening soon. Brookland’s Finest Bar & Kitchen is a new concept by the owners of Solly’s and The Pug. The restaurant is currently under construction and will serve classic American fare 7 days a week, including breakfast. The owners of Rustik Tavern will also be opening a new restaurant on 12th Street called Steel Plate. Scheduled to open in April, the restaurant will feature outdoor garden seating and serve delicious comfort foods such as chicken with dumplings, fried green tomatoes and chicken fried steak.

Want all this variety just steps from your front door? EYA’s Chancellor’s Row community is located just a few blocks from 12th Street NE and the brand new Monroe Street Market.
