Over the past few years, Brookland’s 12th Street NE has been undergoing a quiet renaissance with an influx of exciting new retail and restaurants. Currently home to culturally diverse dining options, Yes! Organic Market  and a new Capital Bikeshare station, 12th Street will also soon feature a new 20-unit condo building. In case you haven’t been in a while, stop by one of the new 12th Street restaurants for a taste of Brookland today.

Menomale has become a neighborhood favorite providing delicious Neapolitan-style pizzas, calzones and wood-fired sandwiches. Named one of the Washingtonian’s 2013 “100 Very Best Restaurants,” the restaurant has received acclaim from both critics and locals. Also specializing in craft beers, Menomalé has 20 craft beers on tap to taste or enjoy with your meal.

Serving up scrumptious Cuban cuisine, Little Ricky’s will add some spice to your life. Enjoy tasty empanadas, ceviche and a variety of sandwiches including Cuban chicken and pulled Cuban coffee BBQ.  They also have a great menu of signature cocktails and are open for brunch on Saturdays and Sundays until 3:00 PM.

12th Street is also home to two wonderful local cafes. The Brookland Café, also known as Bcafe, is a charming neighborhood spot offering American fare and vegan meals. For a different twist on healthy eating, stop by Askale Café for its Ethiopian-American fusion cuisine and unique teas and coffees.

Two more restaurants will also be opening soon. Brookland’s Finest Bar & Kitchen is a new concept by the owners of Solly’s and The Pug. The restaurant is currently under construction and will serve classic American fare 7 days a week, including breakfast. The owners of Rustik Tavern will also be opening a new restaurant on 12th Street called Steel Plate. Scheduled to open in April, the restaurant will feature outdoor garden seating and serve delicious comfort foods such as chicken with dumplings, fried green tomatoes and chicken fried steak.

Want all this variety just steps from your front door? EYA’s Chancellor’s Row community is located just a few blocks from 12th Street NE and the brand new Monroe Street Market.

Guest Post: Rooftop Gardens by Love & Carrots

August 15, 2013 | by | 0 Comments

Shops, restaurants and farmer’s markets abound within walking distance of your EYA home. But even with all those fantastic options, there’s something superbly convenient about having a small rooftop garden at your home when you’re partaking on a culinary adventure.

Love & Carrots created this beautiful rooftop container garden in the District. They offer planning, design, installation and maintenance services.

Love & Carrots created this beautiful rooftop container garden in the District. They offer planning, design, installation and maintenance services.

Washington favorite, Love & Carrots, a home organic vegetable gardening company, does not only specialize in urban farming in people’s backyards, but also rooftops. The company has constructed and actively maintains numerous roof deck gardens throughout the area. With the open skies and beaming sunlight of a wide-open roof, their roof top gardens have become some of their most successful!

Love & Carrots’ rooftop gardens are done in a combination of pots, containers, troughs, and most recently, kiddie pools.  Depending on the aesthetic preference of the client and the weight capacity of the space, they can use a variety of different containers and trellising. They fill the containers with a special soil mixture, which is a combination of peat moss, sand, and compost that will give your vegetables the healthy environment they need. Love & Carrots then adds drip irrigation systems, which conserve much more water than sprinkler systems or even watering with a hose.

Rooftop gardens quickly turn into an edible paradise with vining sweet potatoes and climbing beans, which they will trellis according to your space, perhaps on railings of an EYA townhouse. Growing your food out of containers as opposed to beds has proven to be equally as successful and quite the visual experience. If you’re a busy traveler, Love & Carrots can also help with watering, maintenance and more.

To explore the possibilities of your space and start gathering ideas for which veggies you may want to grow, check out their website at www.loveandcarrots.com.
