Take a Stroll Through Alexandria’s Holiday Market

This holiday season, venture off King Street to nearby Carlyle District for Alexandria’s acclaimed Holiday Market. Located just three blocks from King Street Metro station in John Carlyle Square, the event is a lively European-inspired Holiday Market, complete with arts, crafts, gifts, European fare, sweet treats, specialty beverages, Santa appearances, kids’ activities and live entertainment.

The Holiday Market is open weekends from 11 AM – 8 PM, with additional open hours posted on their website.  This weekend delight your senses with sounds from Seth Kibel, one of the region’s most admired woodwind specialists, Saturday from Noon – 2 PM.

From EYA’s Old Town Commons Townhomes in Alexandria and EYA’s Oronoco Waterfront Condominium residences in Alexandria, stroll down to King Street and hop on the free trolley. It runs every 15 minutes and travels from the waterfront to King Street Metro station.

Get Merry at Mosaic District

The holidays are upon us and Mosaic District is spreading the holiday cheer with an array of fun events! From photos with Santa to horse and carriage rides, Merry Mosaic features something for everyone this holiday season.

Photos with Santa: Now through Christmas Eve, Santa will be making daily appearances at Target to take photos with the kids. Stop by the first floor lobby for a special family photo.

Horse and Carriage Rides: Enjoy a horse-drawn carriage ride through the streets of Mosaic District from December 12th – 20th. Rides will begin in the park behind Dolcezza on Fridays and Saturdays from 2 PM – 9 PM.

Gift Wrapping: Get your gifts beautifully wrapped in the Mosaic District lobby between Take 5 Boutique and Swirl & Sip on Saturdays from 12 PM and 5 PM. Donations will support the Junior League of Northern Virginia.

Brunch with Santa: The man in red will be stopping by Gypsy Soul for brunch with the family on Sundays, December 14th and December 21st. Brunch begins at 10 AM featuring charcuterie, eggs, biscuits and gravy, holiday cookies and more. $25 for adults and $15 for children. Reservations are recommended.

Tree Lighting Celebration in Silver Spring

It’s time to kick off the holiday season! Stop by Fountain Plaza in downtown Silver Spring on Saturday, November 15th for the annual Re-Imagining the Holidays Tree Lighting Celebration. Not your traditional tree lighting ceremony, this event features “Silver Symphony,” a 35-foot tall public art installation made of chimes, bells, pinwheels and ribbons! Starting at 6 PM, the celebration will also include live entertainment, giveaways, hot cocoa, shopping and dining deals and more. Musical instrument donations will be collected to benefit local area schools.

Plus, you can enter to win a special VIP experience! The VIP Holiday Experience includes access to a special tree lighting viewing area, dinner for four at Copper Canyon ($200), four tickets to the Nutcracker presented by the Maryland Youth Ballet and more. The winner will be selected on November 12th.

Thanksgiving Parade Marches into Downtown Silver Spring

It’s coming! The annual Montgomery County Thanksgiving Parade will make its way through downtown Silver Spring on Saturday, November 22nd. The parade will feature over 100 attractions including floats, giant balloons, fire engines, classic cars, marching bands, colorful dance troupes and more. This year, a brand new 12-foot inflatable turkey will make its debut and as usual, the parade will conclude with a special appearance by Santa.

The parade begins at 10 AM at Ellsworth Drive and Fenton Street and proceeds south along Georgia Avenue, ending at Silver Spring Avenue.

The holiday fun continues throughout the season with Deck Out Downtown. Every Saturday from November 29th to December 20th you can enjoy carolers singing holiday tunes, performances by local student groups and lots of great holiday shopping.

Halloween Happenings in Your EYA Neighborhood

Looking for some Halloween fun? From the Silver Spring Zombie Walk to trick-or-treating at the local boutiques, check out these ghoulishly good events taking place in your EYA neighborhood.

Old Town Alexandria

Get a jump on your trick-or-treating in the Old Town Boutique District. Stop by on Saturday, October 25th for Trick or Treat with the Boo-tiques from 11 AM to 6 PM. Old Town’s favorite shops, including Red Barn Mercantile and lou lou, will be giving out treats to goblins and ghouls of all ages. Be sure to bring the kids by Pink and Brown for its 5th annual costume contest. The winner will receive a $100 gift card to the store.

For the grown-ups, head over to the Fish Market on November 1st for its Nightmare on King Street Halloween Bash. Come in your scariest or funniest costume. Prizes for best costume and scariest scream! For a fun date night, go see the classic interactive musical The Rocky Horror Picture Show at the Little Theatre of Alexandria. Now playing through November 15th.

Silver Spring

One event you won’t want to miss is the Silver Spring Zombie Walk! Back from the dead, this year’s Zombie Walk takes place on Saturday, October 25th in downtown Silver Spring. Gather with your fellow Zombies starting at 7 PM next to Jackie’s Sidebar then wander through the streets ending at the AFI Silver Theatre. Be sure to join the Zombie Dance Party along the way! The AFI Silver Theatre will be showing a Zombie movie and retailers will have Zombie-themed specials.

What better way to celebrate Halloween than combining trick-or-treating, shopping and cocktails! Mosaic District has all this and more for your Halloween enjoyment on Thursday, October 30th from 5 PM – 9 PM. Treat bags will be available on a first come, first served basis at the information table at the corner of District Avenue and Strawberry Lane. Come dressed in your best costume and get discounts at select local retailers including 25% off at Langford Market and 15% off at Mint Nail Lounge. Then head over to one of the exciting new restaurants for some scary good cocktails such as Deadly Hot Cider at Matchbox and Smashing Pumpkins at Gypsy Soul.

Bethesda

Bethesda Row offers some “retail scare-apy” on Thursday, October 30th from 5 PM – 7 PM. About 40 shops and restaurants will offer special deals, live entertainment and trick-or-treating for the kids. Participating retailers include Bluemercury and Paper Source, who will have a drawing for a $100 gift card to the store. Georgetown Cupcakes is offering its special Halloween Dozen cupcakes now through October 31st.

If you are feeling adventurous, book a table at Mussel Bar & Grille on October 29th for its Halloween “Mystery” Beer Dinner. For $65, you will receive a 4-course beer and food pairing menu, however the items on the menu are a mystery until you arrive!

On Monday, September 22nd, Washington area drivers will take part in a worldwide movement to support sustainable transportation by pledging to go car free or car-lite. Car Free Day is an international event that takes place in 1,500 cities across 40 countries to celebrate alternative forms of transportation.

To participate, fill out the pledge to go car free or car-lite and use alternative transport such as a bicycle, public transit, carpool or walking. 12th Annual King Street Art Festival

On Saturday, September 13th and Sunday, September 14th, Old Town’s acclaimed King Street will be transformed into a world-class outdoor art gallery. The 12th Annual King Street Art Festival will showcase over 200 artists from the U.S. and abroad featuring more than $15 million worth of handcrafted art and one-of-a-kind wares!

From Washington Street to the waterfront, artist booths will line the street offering festival patrons fine art paintings, sculpture, jewelry, photography and more. The weekend will also be full of hands-on activities, live music and the return of the Ice Cream Bowl Fundraiser! For a $15 donation, you will receive a hand-made ice cream bowl full of delicious ice cream from Artfully Chocolate. Proceeds will benefit the Art League’s ceramic department. The event is free and open to the public.
