Halloween Happenings in Your EYA Neighborhood

Looking for some Halloween fun? From the Silver Spring Zombie Walk to trick-or-treating at the local boutiques, check out these ghoulishly good events taking place in your EYA neighborhood.

Old Town Alexandria

Get a jump on your trick-or-treating in the Old Town Boutique District. Stop by on Saturday, October 25th for Trick or Treat with the Boo-tiques from 11 AM to 6 PM. Old Town’s favorite shops, including Red Barn Mercantile and lou lou, will be giving out treats to goblins and ghouls of all ages. Be sure to bring the kids by Pink and Brown for its 5th annual costume contest. The winner will receive a $100 gift card to the store.

For the grown-ups, head over to the Fish Market on November 1st for its Nightmare on King Street Halloween Bash. Come in your scariest or funniest costume. Prizes for best costume and scariest scream! For a fun date night, go see the classic interactive musical The Rocky Horror Picture Show at the Little Theatre of Alexandria. Now playing through November 15th.

Silver Spring

One event you won’t want to miss is the Silver Spring Zombie Walk! Back from the dead, this year’s Zombie Walk takes place on Saturday, October 25th in downtown Silver Spring. Gather with your fellow Zombies starting at 7 PM next to Jackie’s Sidebar then wander through the streets ending at the AFI Silver Theatre. Be sure to join the Zombie Dance Party along the way! The AFI Silver Theatre will be showing a Zombie movie and retailers will have Zombie-themed specials.

What better way to celebrate Halloween than combining trick-or-treating, shopping and cocktails! Mosaic District has all this and more for your Halloween enjoyment on Thursday, October 30th from 5 PM – 9 PM. Treat bags will be available on a first come, first served basis at the information table at the corner of District Avenue and Strawberry Lane. Come dressed in your best costume and get discounts at select local retailers including 25% off at Langford Market and 15% off at Mint Nail Lounge. Then head over to one of the exciting new restaurants for some scary good cocktails such as Deadly Hot Cider at Matchbox and Smashing Pumpkins at Gypsy Soul.

Bethesda

Bethesda Row offers some “retail scare-apy” on Thursday, October 30th from 5 PM – 7 PM. About 40 shops and restaurants will offer special deals, live entertainment and trick-or-treating for the kids. Participating retailers include Bluemercury and Paper Source, who will have a drawing for a $100 gift card to the store. Georgetown Cupcakes is offering its special Halloween Dozen cupcakes now through October 31st.

If you are feeling adventurous, book a table at Mussel Bar & Grille on October 29th for its Halloween “Mystery” Beer Dinner. For $65, you will receive a 4-course beer and food pairing menu, however the items on the menu are a mystery until you arrive!

Upping the Food Factor at Mosaic

If there was any doubt that Mosaic has become Northern Virginia’s foodie hot spot, the Washington Post presents three more reasons to discover Mosaic.

In their Express article, writer Holley Simmons provides some “don’t miss” advice when visiting the community, which is just a 16-minute walk from Dunn Loring Metro station. Don’t want to make the walk? Fret not. Mosaic offers a Metro shuttle which runs every 12 minutes during rush hour.

12th Annual King Street Art Festival

On Saturday, September 13th and Sunday, September 14th, Old Town’s acclaimed King Street will be transformed into a world-class outdoor art gallery. The 12th Annual King Street Art Festival will showcase over 200 artists from the U.S. and abroad featuring more than $15 million worth of handcrafted art and one-of-a-kind wares!

From Washington Street to the waterfront, artist booths will line the street offering festival patrons fine art paintings, sculpture, jewelry, photography and more. The weekend will also be full of hands-on activities, live music and the return of the Ice Cream Bowl Fundraiser! For a $15 donation, you will receive a hand-made ice cream bowl full of delicious ice cream from Artfully Chocolate. Proceeds will benefit the Art League’s ceramic department. The event is free and open to the public.

Sunday, August 10th kicks off Shop Maryland Tax-Free Week 2014! For the entire week (August 10th – August 16th) there will be tax exemptions on clothing and shoes under $100 per item (accessories do not apply). Click here for more information. Downtown Date Night

Grab your special someone and head over to the Fountain Plaza Stage for some live music. Fridays at 6:30 PM, Downtown Live features a variety of music including reggae, new swing, funk, rock and more. Afterwards, enjoy dinner at one of the many acclaimed Silver Spring restaurants. On Saturdays, head over to the FRESHFARM Farmer’s Market between 9 AM – 1 PM for some locally grown produce. They also offer lots of other tasty treats such as pies, salsas, pastries and more.

Bring the kids by to play in the interactive fountain! Open from 10 AM to 8 PM, the kids will love splashing around on the hot Summer days. More Brookland Shops Ready to Open

Brookland’s booming Monroe Street Market is quickly becoming one of DC’s most coveted neighborhood destinations.

Just announced: Locally-renowned Filter Coffeehouse and Espresso Bar will be partnering with owners of The Bike Rack to bring a bike shop/coffee house concept to a large retail space along the Arts Walk. Their spot is expected to open this Fall.

A farmer’s market will also open at Monroe Street Market this May, offering goods from up to 20 vendors on Saturdays from 9 AM – 1 PM. The market will be operated by Lydia’s Fields, the same group who organizes the Arlington Courthouse Farmer’s Market (pictured).

Whole Foods to Open within One Mile of Arts District Hyattsville

What began nearly 10 years ago as EYA’s vision for Hyattsville’s Route 1 corridor has now blossomed to include another exciting mixed-use development for local residents.

The Whole Foods coming to Riverdale Park is part of a $250 million redevelopment project.

Developers are breaking ground on the County’s first Whole Foods market at the Cafritz property in Riverdale Park, just one mile north of EYA’s Arts District Hyattsville community.

The Whole Foods is slated to open in 2015, along with the remaining yet-to-be-named retail shops on the site, for a total of 168,000 s.f. of retail shopping.

Arts District Hyattsville led the way for the redevelopment of the Route 1 corridor, and includes over 500 new homes, Busboys and Poets, Tara Thai, Elevation Burger, Yes! Organic Market and other shops. An onsite community Metro shuttle brings residents to Prince George’s Plaza station for easy access to downtown DC.

A limited number of new construction townhomes remain in the community, priced from the mid $300s. EYA’s onsite sales center and model home is open daily at 4541 Longfellow Street in Hyattsville or call (301) 699-1900.

Thanksgiving Dinners: Take Out or Go Out

If you love Thanksgiving, but not the cooking, there are many restaurants and markets near your EYA neighborhood that offer fully prepared take home meals or dine-in Thanksgiving Day feasts. From southern-style fried turkeys to organic Thanksgiving meals, there’s plenty to tempt your taste buds this holiday season.

Thanksgiving Turkey

Celebrate Thanksgiving southern-style with a fully prepared take home meal from Georgia Brown’s in the District. Choose between a slow roasted or deep fried turkey hand rubbed with creole seasoning. There are plenty of tasty sides from which to choose, including collard greens, cornbread stuffing and homemade buttermilk biscuits! Orders must be placed by November 25th and picked up on Thanksgiving Day between 8 AM and 11:15 AM.

Whole Foods also prepares take home Thanksgiving dinners, including fully organic and vegan meals. A Traditional Thanksgiving Dinner serves 6-8 people and costs $119.99. The turkey comes ready to cook and sides include sage stuffing, homestyle mashed potatoes, organic cranberry orange relish, turkey gravy and choice of veggies or casserole.

Hill Country Barbecue Market, also in the District, offers both pre-ordered meals and dine-in options. Enjoy their Thanksgiving Day Feast including pit-smoked turkey with pan gravy, Texas toast stuffing, sweet potato bourbon mash, skillet cornbread and many other tasty options. Dine-in prices are $39.95 for adults and $15 for kids 10 and under.

For Thanksgiving with a French-twist, head to La Ferme restaurant in Chevy Chase. The three-course prix-fixe menu costs $47 and includes a number of delectable choices including pumpkin soup, seafood pot pie, roasted turkey, pan seared sea scallops, apple and cinnamon crème brulee and pumpkin and spice roulade cake.

Where better to celebrate Thanksgiving than in charming Old Town Alexandria? Historical Gadsby’s Tavern will be serving Thanksgiving meals that include turkey with savory giblet gravy and candied yams. Price is $49 per person (half price for children under 12). Or pre-order your meal from Old Town’s favorite, The Butcher Block. There are a variety of turkey and side options such as sweet potato puree, mac and cheese and fennel sausage stuffing. Orders must be placed by November 20th.
