First Home at Capitol Quarter Receives LEED Certification
Washington, DC—The U.S. Green Building Council recognized the first LEED for Homes certified townhome at Capitol Quarter at an Earth Day Plaque Ceremony near Capitol Hill on April 22nd. The ceremony marked the first of over 200 homes to be certified in what will soon be the nation’s largest LEED for Homes for-sale neighborhood. Homeowners, green building advocates, and green building product manufacturers gathered for the ceremony and to participate in live demonstrations of the types of inspections homes undergo to achieve LEED certification. “EYA’s commitment to LEED at Capitol Quarter is a shining example—and also a call to action—for homebuilders across the U.S. that achieving LEED certification in larger residential developments is not only possible, but also highly rewarding for the builder and homeowner alike,” said Courtney Baker of the U.S. Green Building Council. EYA (BUILDER Magazine’s 2009 America’s Best Builder) agrees, “Our Capitol Quarter townhome community in Washington DC has defied the real estate market trends of late,” said Bob Youngentob, President and CEO. “We have sold 14 homes already this year and have only 5 more homes that will be available for 2009 move-in. It’s consistent with our philosophy that today’s home buyers demand life within walking distance® and communities close to employment centers, public transportation, and neighborhood retail services will be in demand in any real estate market.” Capitol Quarter offers the District’s only new rowhome-style townhomes—a home style that’s proven for a century to be the most popular choice for DC’s city dwellers. In fact, many suburbanites have given up their single family homes in favor of townhome living that involves less yard work and better access to work, dining and entertainment options. DC’s Capitol Riverfront neighborhood is quickly becoming the perfect new spot for communities such as Capitol Quarter with its proximity to the M Street corridor, the new Nationals Stadium and Capitol Hill. The first homeowners moved in this April and the community will include 323 homes to be built over the next
