Not surprisingly, DC's traffic nightmares have been confirmed and documented as the worst in the nation. A new study by the Texas Transportation Institute found that Washingtonians spend 70 hours every year in traffic delays and waste 57 gallons of gas in these backups.

The traffic study did however highlight how the area's public transportation systems provide a significant amount of relief to commuters. Ranked third best in the country, DC transit systems actually save riders 34,000 hours of delay.
