Just a few blocks from Old Town Commons is the Mount Vernon Trail along the Potomac River. This trail was constructed in 1973 by the National Park Service and stretches 18 beautiful miles from the historic Mount Vernon Estate to Theordore Roosevelt Island connecting conveniently to DC via the Key Bridge. Paralleling the Potomac River you can ride a bike, run or walk along the trail, catching gorgeous DC monument views along the way.

Mount Vernon Trail

I decided to take a walk recently one evening after work with my sister. We headed North on the parkway towards Gravelly Point where we were looking forward to watching the airplanes come and go from Reagan National Airport.

We stopped along the way at Indigo Landing, which offers fine dining inside and outdoors, as well as a less formal setting adjacent to the restaurant. We opted for the less formal setting and sat outside on the deck. We both cooled off and enjoyed an Indigo beer while we watched airplanes, students learn to sail, and fisherman along the banks of the river. Since we got such a late start, we didn't make it to Gravelly Point, but we enjoyed the walk, especially the cool down with the sun setting, birds chirping, and the breeze blowing. What a truly enjoyable evening!

We decided that we will do it again soon, but next time we are going to bike the trail and see what exciting adventures we can share.
