About the Project

EYA's purchase of the Chelsea School's Silver Spring property facilitated the move to the new campus and additional funds for supporting the School's financial sustainability into the future

The Chelsea School is a non-profit, non-public school serving middle school and high school (grades 5-12) students in the DC Metro area with language-based learning differences and ADD/ADHD. For two decades, the Chelsea School’s educational campus occupied the historic Riggs-Thompson House in Silver Spring. In 2010, the school’s administration decided to relocate their campus to Hyattsville, MD, in order to better serve their student body.

EYA submitted an offer to purchase the Chelsea School’s Silver Spring property, facilitating the move to the new campus and additional funds for supporting the School’s financial sustainability into the future. EYA led an extensive community outreach process throughout the entitlement for the Silver Spring property and developed many unique design solutions that accommodated the concerns raised by the residents. In particular, the neighbors expected the townhomes to blend in with the adjacent single-family homes. EYA worked with the community to satisfy their design criteria and ultimately won approval for 55 market-rate townhomes and 8 moderately-priced for-sale townhomes which preserved the Riggs-Thompson House for sale as a single-family home and created a development that generated the land value the Chelsea School required.
