This just in from Congress' Livable Communities Taskforce: Washington-area households living in close-in, transit-friendly neighborhoods spent ten percent less than their suburban counterparts on transportation. Meanwhile, housing costs weren't necessarily higher for urban locations. The study, chaired by Congressman Earl Blumenauer, also suggested that foreclosures were strongly correlated to car ownership and that families with higher automobile expenses were also more likely to be in foreclosure.
