MBT 5K Race Sponsors Announced
WASHINGTON, DC – Two major sponsors have committed their support for the first 5K race to be held on the Metropolitan Branch Trail (MBT) in Northeast DC on Saturday, May 14, at 9:00 a.m. Organizers anticipate that this will become an annual community event to celebrate the versatility of this long-awaited urban pathway and the neighborhoods through which it passes.
Residential developer EYA, which is building the Chancellor’s Row new townhome community adjacent to the trail route, has joined the MBT 5K effort as a Platinum Sponsor, providing $1,000 to subsidize race expenses, permitting local youth runners to register without charge.
Local grocer, Harris Teeter, which opened for business in the NoMa Business Improvement District this winter, is providing bottled water for the event. Confirmed raffle sponsors include Bicycle Space, Pound Coffee, Potomac River Running Store and others. Proceeds will be used to benefit additional trail/community linkages.
DC Road Runners Club, a 501 (c)(3) charitable organization, is co-convening the race, which will be held on the newly paved portion of the MBT, starting at S Street NE and 4th Street NE and the trail entrance. The course will be USATF-certified. Nearby, Project Fitness Community is hosting the Second Annual DC Fitness Challenge at McKinley Technology High School, 151 Street NE. See www.dcfitnesschallenge.org for details about the event or fitness boot camps.
