After just a short walk north from Capitol Quarter in SE, you’ll arrive at a long-standing DC institution: the Eastern Market. A staple weekend destination since its creation in 1871, the Eastern Market is the oldest continuously run open farmers’ market in DC and attracts a wide variety of artists, craftsmen, and food venders to its Capitol Hill location.
The indoor section of the market is housed in South Hall and is open every day of the week except for Monday. Here, you can find a wide variety of fresh food, including fresh meats, cheeses, produce and sweet treats. If you’re not completing your specialty grocery shopping and are ready to enjoy a meal without having to lug it home and prepare it – try Market Lunch. Rave, rave, rave (did we mention rave?) reviews on the blueberry buckwheat pancakes, but be sure to get there early and be prepared to wait in line for a bit (but everyone tells us they're worth it!).
On the weekends, the outdoor market is flooded with unique and interesting artist creations, as well as fresh produce and flowers from local area farms. This market is a weekly destination for many SE inhabitants – you should make it yours too!
