As you drive north up 12th Street and pass Rhode Island Avenue in NE DC, there is no mistaking which part of town you’re entering into now that a new “Welcome to Brookland” sign has been installed on the northwest corner of the intersection. We went to visit the new sign yesterday to admire its metallic art deco style, but we couldn't help but notice that the imagery of its design also felt vaguely familiar to us.
We then recalled our trip to 12th Street a few weeks ago and the CVS storefront on the corner of Newton and 12 Streets. The CVS, which used to be Newton Theater before it was turned into a drug store, has the same tiered symbol on its storefront as on the new “Welcome to Brookland” sign.
As Brookland works to further define itself as a DC neighborhood, this new sign seems to be a great step in adding symbolic imagery to connect the neighborhood. It will be interesting to see if more of these symbols emerge as Brookland continues to further define and brand itself.
