We've had a lot to celebrate at EYA communities across the DMV this summer—from park and playground openings to community completions and more. Not only do we love to gather with our homeowners to celebrate these milestones, but it is also important to us that we offer opportunities for residents to come together, meet new neighbors and forge the ties that create strong communities. Below is a snapshot of some recent events at EYA neighborhoods.

Riggs Park Place, Northeast DC

Not only did we recently complete construction on all the homes in the neighborhood, we also completed the brand new woonerf, which was the perfect place for a celebration!

What is a woonerf, you may ask? A woonerf is a European-style shared street, designed to allow drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians to share the space. This design is becoming increasingly popular in urban settings, providing important accessibility and shared space for the community to enjoy.

Residents gathered on the new woonerf for an afternoon BBQ with music, games and kids activities. It was the perfect inaugural celebration for this beautiful new amenity space.

In June, we celebrated the one-year anniversary of opening the new public children's playground in the Michigan Park neighborhood. This event not only offered the opportunity for our residents to come together, but also to gather with the broader community as well.

Littles ones had a great time playing at the playground (and being entertained by the balloon artist and face painter), while the grown ups enjoyed music, morning coffee, donuts and socializing with neighbors.

In June, we also celebrated the opening of a brand new park and playground at The Townhomes at Reston Station. Homeowners mingled and got to know new neighbors while enjoying refreshments, music and lawn games. Hunter Mill District Supervisor Walter L. Alcorn joined EYA team members for a ribbon cutting to officially open this beautiful new, outdoor amenity space.

EYA President & CEO McLean Quinn stated this on the importance of creating community in new EYA neighborhoods: “We try to facilitate a lifestyle where you can walk down the street with your neighbor to grab a cup of coffee, or play with your kids on the playground, or have a picnic on the lawn. Those are the places where friendships are made."

Although we had planned a celebration in the new park at The Townhomes at Graham Park, mother nature had other ideas. But we didn't let an afternoon thunderstorm stop the festivities! After some creative thinking and last minute adjustments, our team moved the event to the model home and utilized the alley for the food truck and tent space. Homeowners loved the (delicious!) burgers and still enjoyed the afternoon getting to know new neighbors and friends.

Sutton Heights homebuyers gathered at nearby Matchbox in Mosaic District to kick off summer and mingle with new neighbors and soon-to-be residents now that over 50% of homeowners have moved in to the neighborhood. The brand new onsite park is expected to be completed in early fall and we look forward to gathering once again to celebrate the opening of this new amenity space.
