Take a short stroll up Monroe Street from the new townhome community in NE, Chancellor's Row, and you’ll reach Brookland’s 12th Street corridor. We recently toured the neighborhood and confirmed that the twelve block stretch between Michigan Ave & Franklin Street NE is a neighborhood gem not to be overlooked. Home to numerous great restaurants and shops, this street is highly reminiscent of Brookland’s unique, easy-going and charismatic community.
On the restaurant front, one of three specific restaurants to highlight on 12th Street is the Brookland Café, a restaurant known for its light fare vegan and modern cuisine in a cozy environment. The BCafe is also host to a giant wall mural that was unveiled last October calling for social action against the domestic violence, which is resonant of the rising arts community coming to Brookland. A little further along 12th St coming from the north is Café Sureia, an independent coffee shop perfect for a destination walk for a morning beverage or light breakfast. Even further along 12th St is a Polla a la Brasa restaurant called Silvestre Café, which comes greatly recommended from neighborhood bloggers and on yelp.com. Other restaurants along 12th St. corridor include Subway, Brookland Grill, Wings To Go Pizza & Subs, and more.
On a practical front, 12th St is also home to a post office, CVS, TrueValue Hardware, The Brookland Inn, and Providence Opticians, and also has one of the current three Capital Bikeshare stations in Brookland. A new Capital Bikeshare station will be coming to Chancellor's Row next year, which will make the trip to 12th St even easier. As far as recreation goes, Total Relaxation Store provides resources and items to help you relax at home, and Optimism at Bobby Q’s, between N Kearney St & N Lawrence St, is a common happy hour destination for neighborhood residents.
