Mayor William D. Euille, Melvin Miller, Roy Priest and Brian Allan Jackson all spoke at the groundbreaking ceremony for Old Town Commons under sunny skies and with the company of about 100 enthusiastic supporters and EYA staff. Heralding it as an example of cooperation and perseverance, Roy Priest, Executive Director of Alexandria Redevelopment and Housing Authority (ARHA), said that the Old Town Commons model for neighborhood development will be successful at providing a neighborhood environment few could have imagined years ago but is now a reality. He also hoped that this community design will be applied to other areas in Alexandria someday in the future.
Mayor Miller was appreciative of the fact that this day had come and in his remarks hoped for the continued success of such projects. Sr. Vice President of EYA, Brian Jackson, noted that many people had been involved in the process and thanked them for staying the course.
After the ceremony, attendees walked across the street to the Charles Houston Recreation Center for food and conversation.
